Why I Believe a Pacifier is Necessary for Breastfed Babies
As a mother who breastfed both of my children, I can attest to the benefits of using a pacifier for breastfed babies. While some may argue that breastfeeding provides all the comfort and soothing a baby needs, there are several reasons why I believe a pacifier is necessary.
First and foremost, breastfeeding can be exhausting for both the mother and the baby. As much as we may love providing nourishment and comfort to our little ones, there are times when we need a break. A pacifier can offer temporary relief for both parties by satisfying the baby’s sucking reflex without having to constantly nurse.
Additionally, pacifiers have been known to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends offering a pacifier at bedtime and naptime to help reduce this risk. As a mother, this alone was enough reason for me to introduce a pacifier to my breastfed baby.
Moreover, using a pacifier can also help with nipple confusion. Babies who are exclusively breastfed may have difficulty latching onto bottles or other artificial nipples. A pacifier can serve as practice for their sucking skills without affecting their ability to nurse from their mother’s

After researching and trying out various options, I have put together this buying guide to help other parents in their search for the perfect pacifier for their breastfed baby.
1. Consider the Shape and Size
When it comes to choosing a pacifier for your breastfed baby, it is important to consider the shape and size of the nipple. Since babies are already used to a specific shape while breastfeeding, it is recommended to choose a pacifier with a similar shape. Look for pacifiers with a round, orthodontic or natural nipple shape as these are designed to mimic the shape of a mother’s nipple.
Also, pay attention to the size of the pacifier. Newborns have smaller mouths so it is best to start with a smaller-sized pacifier and then switch to a larger one as your baby grows.
2. Material Matters
The material of the pacifier can play a crucial role in your baby’s comfort and safety. Pacifiers are usually made of silicone or latex. Silicone is more durable, easy to clean, and does not contain any allergens. On the other hand, latex is softer but may cause allergies in some babies.
I personally prefer silicone pacifiers as they are safer and easier to maintain compared to latex ones.

BPA (bisphenol A) is a chemical used in the production of plastics and can be harmful to babies if ingested. Make sure to choose BPA-free pacifiers for your breastfed baby to avoid any health risks.
5. Consider Your Baby’s Preference
Ultimately, your baby’s preference is what matters the most. Some babies may not take to a pacifier at all, while others may have a preference for a specific brand or shape. It may take some trial and error before finding the right pacifier for your baby.
I suggest trying out different options and observing your baby’s reaction before settling on one.
6. Check for Age Recommendation
Pacifiers come with an age recommendation label which is important to consider while making a purchase. This ensures that the pacifier is suitable for your baby’s developmental stage and needs.
